Proanthocyanidins (PACs) in cranberry prevent E. coli bacteria from adhering to the walls of the urinary tract, reducing the likelihood of infection taking hold.
More effective for prevention than treatment of active infections. Cranberry juice contains high sugar — supplements are preferable. Not a replacement for antibiotics in active infection.
