for Cold Sores
Over-the-counter antiviral cream (5% aciclovir) applied to the cold sore at first sign of tingling, every 4 hours for 5 days.
How it works
Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits HSV-1 DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication and reducing the duration and severity of outbreaks.
What to watch for
Most effective when started at the tingling stage before the blister appears. Will not prevent future outbreaks. Avoid getting in eyes.
