How it works

Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue that inhibits HSV-1 DNA polymerase, preventing viral replication and reducing the duration and severity of outbreaks.

Most effective when started at the tingling stage before the blister appears. Will not prevent future outbreaks. Avoid getting in eyes.

Why strong evidence

Multiple RCTs confirm topical aciclovir reduces healing time by 1–2 days and reduces pain. Available over the counter in most countries.
