for Gout
Reducing or eliminating alcohol — particularly beer and spirits — to lower uric acid levels and reduce gout attack frequency.
How it works
Alcohol inhibits kidney excretion of uric acid and beer specifically contains high levels of purines (guanosine). Both mechanisms raise serum uric acid significantly.
What to watch for
Beer has the strongest association with gout attacks. Wine appears to have a smaller effect. Complete abstinence during acute attacks is strongly recommended.
