How it works
Allopurinol inhibits xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts xanthine to uric acid, reducing serum urate levels and dissolving urate crystals from joints over time.
What to watch for
Do not start during an acute attack — can prolong it. Titrate dose based on serum urate and kidney function. Rare serious skin reactions in certain populations (screen Asian patients for HLA-B*5801).
