for High Cholesterol
A small sour fruit from the Indian subcontinent taken as a standardised extract or powder to support healthy cholesterol levels. Standardised extracts of 500mg-1000mg daily are used in clinical studies. Raw amla powder is widely available but the active emblicanin compounds degrade quickly — standardised extracts are more reliable.
How it works
Amla contains emblicanins — potent antioxidants that may reduce oxidative damage to LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream. Reduced oxidation means less damaged cholesterol sticking to artery walls. May also modestly inhibit cholesterol synthesis in the liver through a different pathway to statins.
What to watch for
Evidence comes from small trials mostly in Indian populations — larger independent RCTs are needed. Not a substitute for statins in high cardiovascular risk patients. Choose standardised extracts over raw powder for consistent potency. May interact with blood thinning medications.
