for Sore Throat
OTC throat sprays containing topical anaesthetics (lidocaine or benzocaine) that temporarily numb the throat to relieve pain when swallowing.
How it works
Lidocaine blocks voltage-gated sodium channels in pharyngeal sensory nerve endings, providing rapid local anaesthesia and short-term pain relief.
What to watch for
Effect lasts only 20–30 minutes. Do not eat or drink immediately after (choking risk from reduced gag reflex). Not for children under 6. Benzocaine: rare risk of methaemoglobinaemia.
