How it works
External ankle support limits the range of motion associated with re-sprain (inversion and plantarflexion). Skin compression from the brace also enhances proprioceptive input from ankle mechanoreceptors.
Brace use for 6–12 months post-sprain during sport significantly reduces re-sprain risk. Should not replace proprioceptive rehabilitation — strengthening the ankle remains essential. Lace-up style braces show best evidence.
Finding a practitioner
Seek a qualified and registered practitioner. In Australia, check AHPRA (ahpra.gov.au) for registered health practitioners including physiotherapists, psychologists, and Chinese medicine practitioners.
