for Whooping Cough (Pertussis)
Prescription azithromycin or clarithromycin is the primary treatment for whooping cough. Most effective when started in the catarrhal phase before severe coughing begins.
How it works
Macrolide antibiotics kill Bordetella pertussis bacteria. When started early they significantly reduce infectivity and may reduce cough duration.
What to watch for
Requires prescription. Even after antibiotics the cough can persist for weeks to months. Infants under 6 months require hospitalisation.
