for Acne
A naturally occurring dicarboxylic acid applied topically at 15–20% concentration that targets both acne lesions and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.
How it works
Azelaic acid inhibits tyrosinase (reducing PIH), has keratolytic effects on the follicle, and directly inhibits P. acnes growth through its antimicrobial properties.
What to watch for
Milder than benzoyl peroxide — well tolerated by sensitive skin. May cause initial tingling. 20% requires prescription; 10–15% available OTC. Safe in pregnancy.
