for High Cholesterol
An alkaloid compound from barberry and related plants that has shown cholesterol-lowering effects comparable in some studies to low-dose statins.
How it works
Berberine upregulates LDL receptor expression in hepatocytes, increasing clearance of LDL cholesterol. It also inhibits cholesterol synthesis and has mild effects on triglycerides.
What to watch for
Multiple drug interactions (CYP3A4 inhibitor) — check with pharmacist if on statins or other medications. GI side effects are common. Avoid in pregnancy.
