for Sinusitis
Bromelain, an enzyme derived from pineapple stem, has been studied for its anti-inflammatory and mucolytic properties in sinusitis. Some older RCTs support its use as an adjunct therapy. More commonly used in Germany and Europe than in Australia or the US.
How it works
Bromelain inhibits pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and reduces tissue oedema. It also has fibrinolytic and mucolytic activity, which may help break down thick mucus and reduce sinonasal inflammation and swelling.
What to watch for
Evidence is older and limited by study quality. Best evidence is as an adjunct to standard treatment, not as monotherapy. Avoid if allergic to pineapple. May enhance the absorption of certain antibiotics. Consult a pharmacist or doctor if on anticoagulants.
