How it works
Bromelain inhibits pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and reduces tissue oedema. It also has fibrinolytic and mucolytic activity, which may help break down thick mucus and reduce sinonasal inflammation and swelling.
Evidence is older and limited by study quality. Best evidence is as an adjunct to standard treatment, not as monotherapy. Avoid if allergic to pineapple. May enhance the absorption of certain antibiotics. Consult a pharmacist or doctor if on anticoagulants.
Availability
Available at pharmacies and health food stores without prescription. The form of supplement matters — check the remedy description for the recommended form.
