Bupropion (Zyban)

for Nicotine Withdrawal

Bupropion (an antidepressant repurposed for smoking cessation) reduces nicotine cravings and withdrawal symptoms. It was the first non-nicotine pharmacotherapy approved for smoking cessation.

How it works

Inhibits reuptake of dopamine and noradrenaline, partially mimicking the dopaminergic reward of nicotine. Also acts as a nicotinic receptor antagonist, weakening the reinforcing effect of smoking.

What to watch for

Prescription only. Contraindicated in eating disorders, seizure disorders, and recent MAOI use. Reduces seizure threshold. Not as effective as varenicline but a useful option when varenicline is not tolerated.
