Calcium and Vitamin D

for Muscle Cramps

Calcium is directly involved in the muscle contraction mechanism; deficiency can cause muscle cramps. Vitamin D is required for calcium absorption and neuromuscular function.

How it works

Calcium triggers muscle contraction at the troponin-tropomyosin complex. Hypocalcaemia causes increased membrane excitability and spontaneous cramping (tetany in severe cases). Vitamin D deficiency reduces calcium absorption and impairs neuromuscular function.

What to watch for

Most relevant when deficiency is present β€” assess with serum calcium and 25-OH vitamin D before high-dose supplementation. Calcium supplementation without vitamin D is poorly absorbed. Avoid excessive supplementation.
