for Cataracts
Castor oil applied to the eyes has been widely promoted on social media as a natural remedy for cataracts. Despite popular claims it cannot dissolve or reverse cataracts.
How it works
Castor oil cannot penetrate the cornea to reach the lens where cataracts form. No plausible mechanism exists for topical castor oil to affect lens protein aggregation.
What to watch for
Undiluted castor oil can irritate or damage eye surface cells. Only use pharmaceutical grade eye drops if using castor oil for dry eye which does have some evidence. Do not use as a substitute for cataract surgery assessment.
