for Fears and Phobias
Cognitive restructuring targets the catastrophic predictions and probability overestimations that fuel phobic fear, replacing them with more realistic appraisals.
How it works
Reduces anticipatory anxiety by modifying threat appraisal β the cognitive process by which feared outcomes are evaluated as both likely and unmanageable. Works best in combination with exposure.
What to watch for
Less effective as a standalone treatment for specific phobias than exposure alone. Most powerful when combined with behavioural exposure as part of CBT.
