for Tendonitis
Corticosteroid injections provide short-term pain relief in tendinopathy but are now understood to have no long-term benefit and may increase re-rupture risk — their use is now more selective.
How it works
Reduces peritendinous inflammation acutely, providing short-term pain relief. However, corticosteroids can weaken tendon collagen structure, increasing rupture risk with repeated injections.
What to watch for
Current guidelines advise caution with corticosteroid injections in tendinopathy — particularly the Achilles and patellar tendons where rupture risk is significant. If used, combine with active loading programme and limit to 1–2 injections.
