for Arthritis
Curcumin, the active compound in turmeric, has multiple clinical trials supporting its use for osteoarthritis pain with an anti-inflammatory mechanism comparable to NSAIDs but a safer side-effect profile.
How it works
Inhibits NF-κB signalling and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6). Modulates COX-2 expression. Poor oral bioavailability unless formulated with piperine (black pepper) or in phospholipid complexes.
What to watch for
Use bioavailable formulations with piperine or phospholipid complex (e.g. Meriva, Longvida). Standard turmeric powder has minimal bioavailability. High doses may increase bleeding risk and interact with anticoagulants.
