Eucalyptus Steam Inhalation

for Sinusitis

Inhaling steam with a few drops of eucalyptus oil added. Used widely as a home remedy for sinus congestion and pressure. Provides symptomatic relief by loosening mucus and opening nasal passages. Best done for 5–10 minutes, 2–3 times daily during acute symptoms.

How it works

Eucalyptus oil contains cineole (1,8-cineole), which has demonstrated mucolytic and mild anti-inflammatory properties. Steam itself loosens mucus by humidifying the nasal passages, while cineole may reduce sinonasal inflammation and improve mucociliary clearance.

What to watch for

Steam can cause burns — use a large bowl, not a kettle, and keep a safe distance. Do not use eucalyptus oil near infants or young children — it can cause respiratory distress. Avoid if asthmatic, as steam and essential oils can trigger bronchospasm in some people.
