for High Cholesterol
Aged garlic extract or allicin-standardised supplements taken to modestly reduce total and LDL cholesterol levels.
How it works
Allicin and sulphur compounds in garlic inhibit hepatic cholesterol synthesis (HMG-CoA reductase pathway) and may mildly increase HDL.
What to watch for
Fresh garlic has minimal evidence; standardised extract supplements are required. GI side effects and odour are common. May interact with anticoagulants. Effect size is modest (~5–10% LDL reduction).
