Ginger has natural prokinetic and anti-nausea properties that may help with the nausea and motility aspects of IBS, particularly the diarrhoea subtype.

How it works

Gingerols and shogaols accelerate gastric emptying, reduce intestinal spasm, and inhibit 5-HT3 receptors involved in nausea and gut motility.

What to watch for

Generally very safe. Can interact with blood thinners at high doses. Supplements standardised to gingerol content are more reliable than raw ginger alone.
