for Arthritis
Glucosamine sulphate and chondroitin sulphate are natural compounds found in cartilage, widely used as supplements for osteoarthritis. Evidence is mixed but some trials show benefit for joint pain.
How it works
Glucosamine is a precursor to proteoglycans in cartilage matrix. Chondroitin inhibits cartilage-degrading enzymes. Together they may have mild anti-inflammatory and cartilage-supportive effects.
What to watch for
Evidence is highly variable across trials. Most benefit seen with pharmaceutical-grade glucosamine sulphate (not hydrochloride) at 1500mg/day. GAIT trial showed combination beneficial only in moderate-severe OA subgroup. Some shellfish allergy concern with glucosamine.
