How it works

Glucosamine is a building block of cartilage. Chondroitin may inhibit enzymes that break down cartilage. Both may have mild anti-inflammatory effects in joint tissue.

Evidence is mixed β€” some large trials show no benefit over placebo. Most effective in people with moderate-to-severe knee pain. Quality varies between products. Shellfish allergy relevant for glucosamine.

Why moderate evidence

Mixed evidence β€” GAIT trial found no overall benefit but significant benefit in the moderate-to-severe pain subgroup. European guidelines support use; US guidelines are more cautious.
