How it works

Honey forms a physical protective coating over irritated throat tissue, has demonstrated antimicrobial properties and may suppress the cough reflex through effects on sensory nerves.

Never give to children under 12 months. Use warm not hot liquid to avoid destroying honey's beneficial properties.

Why strong evidence

RCTs confirm honey reduces sore throat symptoms and cough. WHO recommends honey as a first-line treatment for acute cough and sore throat in children and adults.
