How it works

Dehydration and electrolyte depletion alter muscle membrane excitability and the balance between inhibitory (Golgi tendon organ) and excitatory (muscle spindle) neural signals, predisposing to spontaneous cramping.

Electrolyte replacement (sports drinks, electrolyte tablets) is important during endurance exercise lasting >1 hour. Water alone during prolonged sweating can dilute sodium and worsen cramps (hyponatraemia).

Getting started

This is a lifestyle-based approach. Start gradually and consult a health professional if you have any concerns about suitability for your situation.
