Ibuprofen or Paracetamol

for Sore Throat

Over-the-counter ibuprofen (anti-inflammatory) or paracetamol for pain relief and fever reduction during sore throat.

How it works

Ibuprofen inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production and thereby reducing inflammation and pain. Paracetamol reduces pain centrally.

What to watch for

Ibuprofen is preferable as it addresses inflammation as well as pain. Take with food. Do not exceed recommended doses. Seek medical attention if sore throat is severe, persistent beyond 7 days or accompanied by high fever.
