for Sprains
Ice application in the first 24–72 hours after a sprain reduces acute pain and may limit initial swelling.
How it works
Vasoconstriction reduces inflammatory hyperaemia and plasma extravasation. Reduces nerve conduction velocity, providing analgesia. Cold-induced vasoconstriction limits the inflammatory oedema cascade.
What to watch for
Apply for 15–20 minutes, 3–4 times daily. Use a cloth barrier to prevent ice burns. Recent evidence suggests ice may delay healing if used excessively — use for pain relief, not as primary treatment. Avoid on compromised circulation.
