How it works
Primary fuel for enterocytes (gut lining cells). Reduces intestinal permeability by supporting tight junction proteins, and may reduce visceral hypersensitivity.
Most evidence is for post-infectious IBS. Less clear benefit for IBS without a prior gut infection. Generally very safe at recommended doses.
A 2019 Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology RCT found L-glutamine significantly reduced IBS symptoms in post-infectious IBS compared to placebo.
