How it works

Rosmarinic acid and other polyphenols in lemon balm have demonstrated antiviral activity against HSV-1 in laboratory and clinical studies.

Available as specialist creams. Less evidence than aciclovir but a reasonable natural alternative. Avoid in known allergy to the mint family.

Why moderate evidence

German clinical trials show lemon balm cream reduces healing time and symptom severity. Recommended in German Commission E guidelines for cold sores.
