How it works
Loperamide is a peripheral mu-opioid receptor agonist that slows intestinal peristalsis, reduces fluid secretion into the bowel, and increases anal sphincter tone.
What to watch for
Do not use if diarrhoea is bloody or accompanied by high fever — may worsen bacterial infections. Avoid in children under 2. Does not treat the underlying cause.
