How it works

FODMAPs are poorly absorbed in the small intestine and fermented by gut bacteria, producing gas that causes pain and bloating in hypersensitive bowels.

Requires guidance from a dietitian for the reintroduction phase. Long-term restriction is not recommended as it alters gut microbiome diversity. Not suitable with a history of eating disorders.

Why very strong evidence

Multiple high-quality RCTs and systematic reviews show 50–75% of IBS patients achieve significant symptom relief on a low FODMAP diet.
