Minoxidil (Topical)

for Hair Loss

Over-the-counter topical minoxidil solution or foam (2% for women, 2% or 5% for men) applied to the scalp twice daily.

How it works

Prolongs the anagen (growth) phase of hair follicles, increases follicle size and improves blood flow to the scalp. Mechanism not fully established.

What to watch for

Must be used continuously — hair loss resumes within months of stopping. Can cause initial increased shedding in the first 2 months (normal). Some people experience scalp irritation.
