Narrowband UVB (NB-UVB) light therapy for vitiligo repigmentation. The most widely used and evidence-based treatment for non-segmental vitiligo. Requires specialist referral and multiple sessions.
How it works
NB-UVB stimulates remaining melanocytes in hair follicles to proliferate and migrate into affected skin. It also modulates the local autoimmune environment that is attacking melanocytes.
What to watch for
Requires dermatologist referral. Typically 2-3 sessions per week for several months. Results vary significantly - face and trunk respond better than hands and feet. Not suitable for everyone. Medicare rebates may apply with specialist referral in Australia.
