Oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are widely used for arthritis pain relief and inflammation reduction, with both over-the-counter and prescription options available.
How it works
Inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, blocking prostaglandin synthesis and reducing pain and inflammation. Selective COX-2 inhibitors (e.g. celecoxib) have better GI tolerability.
What to watch for
Use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time. Carry significant GI, cardiovascular, and renal risks with long-term use. Contraindicated in renal impairment and should be used with caution in cardiovascular disease. Topical NSAIDs are safer for localised joint pain.
