How it works
EPA and DHA compete with arachidonic acid to reduce production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes that drive joint inflammation.
Effects take months to build. Most evidence is for rheumatoid arthritis — evidence for osteoarthritis is weaker. May modestly reduce NSAID requirements.
Meta-analyses consistently show omega-3 supplementation reduces joint pain, morning stiffness and NSAID use in rheumatoid arthritis. Evidence in osteoarthritis is more modest.
