Oral Rehydration Solution

for Gastroenteritis

Oral rehydration solution (ORS) — either commercial sachets or homemade (6 teaspoons sugar, half teaspoon salt in 1 litre clean water) taken in small sips frequently.

How it works

Replaces fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea. The glucose-sodium cotransport mechanism in the gut remains functional even during diarrhoea, allowing rapid rehydration.

What to watch for

Sip slowly if vomiting. Do not use sports drinks as a substitute. Make fresh if using sachets.
