How it works
Valacyclovir is a prodrug of aciclovir, a nucleoside analogue that inhibits viral DNA polymerase, preventing herpes simplex virus replication.
What to watch for
Requires a prescription. Works best when started within 24–48 hours of symptom onset. Not a cure — does not eliminate the dormant virus.
