for Diarrhoea
Oral rehydration solution (ORS) — either commercial sachets or homemade (6 teaspoons sugar, half teaspoon salt in 1 litre clean water) taken in small sips frequently.
How it works
Replaces fluids and electrolytes lost through diarrhoea. The glucose-sodium cotransport mechanism in the gut remains functional even during diarrhoea, allowing rapid rehydration.
What to watch for
The most important intervention for any diarrhoea — dehydration is the main danger, particularly in children and elderly. Seek medical attention if unable to keep fluids down, if there is blood in stools, or if symptoms persist beyond 3 days.
