How it works

Ibuprofen inhibits COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes, reducing prostaglandin production and thereby reducing inflammation and pain. Paracetamol reduces pain centrally.

Ibuprofen is preferable as it addresses inflammation as well as pain. Take with food. Do not exceed recommended doses. Seek medical attention if sore throat is severe, persistent beyond 7 days or accompanied by high fever.

Why very strong evidence

Strong evidence for both ibuprofen and paracetamol for sore throat pain relief. Ibuprofen consistently outperforms paracetamol in RCTs for sore throat specifically.
