How it works

Menthol activates cold receptors (TRPM8) which may interfere with nausea signalling pathways. Peppermint oil relaxes gastric smooth muscle, reducing gastric spasm.

Enteric-coated capsules are needed for IBS-related nausea β€” without coating, peppermint oil can cause heartburn. Avoid in those with GORD.

Why moderate evidence

Several studies show inhaled peppermint oil reduces postoperative nausea. Peppermint tea is widely used and considered safe for general nausea.
