How it works

Potassium helps the kidneys excrete sodium and relaxes blood vessel walls, directly counteracting the hypertensive effects of excess sodium.

Those with kidney disease or taking ACE inhibitors/ARBs should consult a doctor before significantly increasing potassium intake.

Why strong evidence

Multiple studies show increased potassium intake reduces systolic BP by 3–5 mmHg. Effect is amplified with concurrent sodium restriction.
