How it works
Potassium is essential for the resting membrane potential of muscle cells. Hypokalaemia (low potassium) increases membrane excitability, predisposing to spontaneous cramps and weakness.
Most relevant when dietary intake is poor or potassium losses are high (e.g. from diuretics, heavy sweating, or GI illness). Rich sources: bananas, avocado, potatoes, dark leafy greens, yoghurt.
Dietary changes
Consider speaking to a GP, dietitian, or naturopath before making significant changes to your diet, particularly if you have an existing health condition.
