Monacolin K inhibits HMG-CoA reductase, the same enzyme targeted by prescription statins, reducing the liver's production of cholesterol.
Because it contains a statin-like compound, it carries similar risks to prescription statins including muscle pain and liver effects. Not appropriate alongside statin medication. Consult your doctor.
Meta-analyses show red yeast rice reduces LDL by 15β25%. However product quality varies significantly β monacolin K content is inconsistent across brands.
