How it works

Soluble fibre binds bile acids in the gut, reducing their reabsorption and forcing the liver to convert more cholesterol into bile acids, thereby lowering blood cholesterol.

Increase fibre intake gradually to avoid bloating and gas. Drink plenty of water when supplementing with psyllium husk.

Why strong evidence

Meta-analyses confirm that each additional 5–10g of soluble fibre per day reduces LDL by 5%. Psyllium is the most studied supplement form.
