How it works
Reduces the sympathetic nervous system activation that increases masseter and temporalis muscle tension. CBT addresses catastrophising about pain and hypervigilance to jaw sensation.
Most effective when combined with dental and physiotherapy management. Available via Medicare MHCP. Biofeedback (teaching patients to reduce jaw muscle EMG) is a specialised but effective variant.
Finding a practitioner
Seek a qualified and registered practitioner. In Australia, check AHPRA (ahpra.gov.au) for registered health practitioners including physiotherapists, psychologists, and Chinese medicine practitioners.
