How it works
Stress activates the HPA axis and sympathetic nervous system, increasing gut motility, permeability, and visceral sensitivity. Reducing stress reverses these effects.
Works alongside dietary changes, not instead of them. CBT for IBS and gut-directed hypnotherapy have the strongest and most specific evidence base.
Multiple RCTs show psychological interventions (CBT, mindfulness, gut-directed hypnotherapy) produce significant IBS improvement, particularly for pain.

“Some improvement but not as dramatic as I hoped. Might need longer to see full benefit. Still continuing.”
