Stretching and Flexibility Work

for Muscle Pain

Static and dynamic stretching maintains muscle flexibility, reduces tension-type muscle pain, and may reduce injury risk — though evidence for DOMS reduction is less robust than for chronic muscle tension.

How it works

Static stretching increases sarcomere length and reduces passive muscle stiffness. For chronic muscle pain, stretching restores resting muscle length and reduces hypertonic muscle tension.

What to watch for

Static stretching does not reliably prevent DOMS. More effective for chronic muscle tension and flexibility maintenance. Dynamic stretching before exercise is more appropriate than static stretching.
