for Neuralgia
Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) is an antioxidant with RCT evidence for improving diabetic peripheral neuropathy symptoms, including neuropathic pain.
How it works
Reduces oxidative stress in peripheral nerve mitochondria, improving nerve blood flow and conduction velocity. Reduces the reactive oxygen species that damage peripheral nerve fibres in diabetic neuropathy.
What to watch for
Most evidence for diabetic neuropathy specifically — less evidence for other neuropathic pain types. Use R-ALA form for superior bioavailability. Typical dose: 600mg/day. May mildly reduce blood glucose.
