for UTI
First-line prescription antibiotic treatment for acute uncomplicated UTI. A short course rapidly clears the infection in the vast majority of cases.
How it works
Nitrofurantoin is reduced within bacteria to reactive intermediates that damage DNA and respiratory enzymes. Trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, blocking bacterial folic acid synthesis.
What to watch for
Requires GP prescription. Complete the full course to prevent recurrence and resistance. Nitrofurantoin should be avoided in significant renal impairment. Trimethoprim resistance is increasing in many regions.
