How it works

Block H1 histamine receptors, reducing the allergic cascade triggered by pollen-mast cell interaction. Onset within 30–60 minutes.

Less effective than nasal steroids for congestion. Cetirizine can be mildly sedating in some people despite being classified as non-drowsy. Works best taken prophylactically.

Why very strong evidence

Decades of RCT evidence confirm efficacy for sneezing, itch, and rhinorrhoea. Combined with nasal steroids for full symptom control, particularly for congestion.
